Phali keen to play at Soccer City

Jomo Cosmos goalkeeper Avril Phali was one of the last players to play in a game at the old Soccer City Stadium before it was demolished to make way for the 2010 Fifa World Cup, the magnificent Soccer City Stadium.

In December 2006 Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates played the last ever match at the gargantuan 90 000 seater stadium and Phali was in goal for the Buccaneers. The game ended 1-1.

“I’ve watched a few games at the new stadium but have not played there yet. I can’t wait to run out on the field as it looks like a superb stadium,” he said.

“The last stadium was big but this one is big and beautiful. Many memorable games were played there and we can make history there too,” he said of their impending Absa Premiership clash this Saturday night against the mighty AmaKhosi .

“It’s always good to start against a big team. We can definitely gauge ourselves in this match and take it from there. Chiefs are a quality side and are playing a very quick game. I watched them against Tottenham and Pirates,” he said of Chiefs duels with English Premiership outfit Tottenham Hotspurs and in the Vodacom Challenge as well as the Black Label Cup which took place at Soccer City.

Cosmos re-enter the Premiership just a season after being relegated and Phali says they know what to expect and have prepared adequately this time.

“Pre-season was tough but we through that now and just waiting patiently for our game. We signed a few quality players and held on to very good players here. These players will give their all this season and I don’t see us failing,” Ezenkosi’s number one said boldly.

“We all know what Chiefs are about and in this game you have to be prepared mentally too. In the National First Division it was man to man, here it’s a thinking game and our players will adjust quickly,” the 32 year-old said. “Jomo (Sono) has prepared us well so yeah, we’ll see what happens.”

Kickoff is at 8:15pm and the game will be shown live on SABC and SuperSport.
