Orlando Pirates send Highlands packing

An own goal from Augustine Mbara and a strike from Tendai Ndoro ensured Orlando Pirates are through to the next round of the Telkom Knockout as they beat Highlands Park 2-1 at Orlando Stadium on Saturday night.

Gordon Igesund's men found the back of the net through Mothobi Mvala, but it was not enough to bring them back in the match.

As early as the 16th minute, goalkeeper Brighton Mhlongo was called to action as he produced a beautiful save to deny Thanduyise Khuboni.

In the 27th minute, the Buccaneers kept knocking at their visitors door and missed the target through Luvuyo Memela after a wonderful cross from Tendai Ndoro.

However, with six minutes to go in the half Memela delivered a great set piece into the box and Augustine Mbara deflected the delivery into his own net.

It was 1-0 at the interval in favour of Augusto Palacios' side.

Highlands came back a better team in the second stanza with Edwin Sitayitayi having a good chance to level the matters but his curler went wide off Kapini's post.

In the 60th minute, Mpho Makola set up Ndoro on the right flank to allow the Zimbabwean forward to easily convert it from close range making it 2-0.

Six minutes later, Mothobi Mvala pulled one back for the Lions of the North after a well drilled cross by Kgomotso Koena to beat Mhlongo.

With 12 minutes remaining on the clock, the Sea Robbers pushed for a third goal with Thabo Matlaba hitting the woodwork with a strike.

Mbesuma nearly secured a second goal for the visitors with two minutes remaining when he received a pass from the left wing only to see his attempt come off the near post.

In the end, the Soweto giants held on to their lead and now reach the semifinals of the competition, joining SuperSport United and Cape Town City.
