As we head into the weekend’s MTN8 first leg semi-final showdowns, we refresh your memories as to the previous round’s action.

The 2016 MTN8 started in Cape Town with a bang, newly-formed club Cape Town City hosting Kaizer Chiefs at a packed stadium on Friday night, 26 August.

Eric Tinkler’s men won 1-0 with new Australian recruit Matthew Sim settling the contest with a seventh minute goal as the home coach ensured his unbeaten record against counterpart Steve Komphela was maintained.

The action shifted up to the North West Province on Saturday afternoon, where Platinum Stars hosted Chippa United in Rustenburg.

There was heartbreak for the home side as the Chilli Boys recorded a 2-0 win, Rhulani Manzini netting on nine minutes and Menzi Masuku scoring 11 minutes from time at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium as Dan Malesela’s men moved into the semi-finals.

On Saturday evening the focus was in Johannesburg, where heavyweights Bidvest Wits locked horns with Orlando Pirates at the Bidvest Stadium.

The Buccaneers landed the first blow when Oupa Manyisa (16) put them ahead, before Buhle Mkhwanazi (38) replied. Gavin Hunt’s men then grabbed the winner with 15 minutes to play as Thulani Hlatshwayo 15 minutes from time.

The final game saw Mamelodi Sundowns emerge victorious from the Tshwane derby against SuperSport United, which was played at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Wayne Arendse (18), Sibusiso Vilakazi (74), on his domestic debut, and Khama Billiat (80) all scored for Pitso Mosimane’s side in a 3-1 win. The consolation goal for Matsatsantsa came via Kingston Nkhatha in the 45th minute.
