MTN8: Five days until lift-off!

The countdown is very much on for the commencement of the 2016 MTN8 competition, which starts on Friday 26 August 2016.

The tournament sees the top eight clubs from last season’s Absa Premiership campaign battling it out for a winner-takes-all prize of a whopping R8 million, the other seven teams each receiving an amount of R800 000 for their participation.

Last year’s winners Ajax Cape Town will not be around to try and defend their title after having failed to earn a top eight finish in the Absa Premiership.

The Mother City’s focus will instead be on Cape Town City, the club which formed after the purchase of Mpumalanga Black Aces’ franchise. They kick proceedings off with a mouth-watering clash against 2014 MTN8 champions Kaizer Chiefs at the Cape Town Stadium on Friday night, 26 August.

The following afternoon, Platinum Stars, 2013 MTN8 champs, host Chippa United in the North West, while Bidvest Wits meet Orlando Pirates in Johannesburg later on Saturday night.

PSL champions Mamelodi Sundowns, yet to win the top eight competition under its current sponsorship by MTN, take on Tshwane rivals SuperSport United on Sunday afternoon.
