Tricky Cosmos hosts Wits in TKO

Jomo Cosmos and Bidvest Wits will battle for a place in the Telkom Knockout quarterfinals when they meet at Sinaba Stadium on Sunday.

This will be the seventh official cup meeting of the teams since 1985. Cosmos have three wins, Wits two, and one match ended in a draw.

The teams have met twice in the Telkom Knockout since its inception in 2006. Both were last 16 ties at home for the Clever Boys and both were won by Ezenkosi: 2-1 in 2007/08 and 2-0 in 2009/10.

In total, Cosmos and Wits have met in 51 matches in all competitions since 1985. Ezenkosi have 17 wins, the Clever Boys 14, and there have been 20 draws.

The teams met in a recent Absa Premiership match at the Sinaba Stadium which ended in a goalless draw.

Cosmos defeated Bloemfontein Celtic 3-0 in the last 16 of this season’s Telkom Knockout, with Berthe, Tukane and Loke scoring the goals.

This quarterfinal showing matches Ezenkosi’s best Telkom Knockout performance since its inception in 2006. They also reached the last eight in 2007/08 and 2009/10. Overall, Cosmos have played six Telkom Knockout matches with a record of three wins and three losses.

Jomo Sono’s club are the third most successful team in this cup competition’s history: they have won it twice (2002/03 and 2005/06 Coca-Cola Cup) from four final appearances (1988, 2001/02, 2002/03 & 2005/06).

Only Kaizer Chiefs (13 titles, 16 final appearances) and Bush Bucks (three titles, four final appearances) have a better record than Cosmos.

Wits defeated AmaZulu 1-0 in the last 16 of this season’s Telkom Knockout thanks to an own goal from Kasonga.

This season marks the first time that the Clever Boys are appearing in the quarterfinals of the Telkom Knockout since its inception in 2006.

Wits have played six Telkom Knockout matches with a record of one win and five losses.

The University-based team has won this cup competition twice in the past: 1985 when it was known as the John Player Special Knockout Cup and 1995 when it was the Coca-Cola Cup.

Kickoff is at 3pm.
