First point for Cosmos

A goalless draw at Sinaba Stadium between Jomo Cosmos and AmaZulu on Tuesday night allowed Jomo Sono’s team to pick up its first point of the season in the Absa Premiership.

It was a crunching start to the match and the ferociousness of the tackles resulted in an injury early on Cosmos’ Buti Khoza who had to be carried from the field in the fifth minute.

The home side’s keeper, who was making his debut, suffered an unintentional blow to the head when he collided with AmaZulu’s Ayanda Dlamini who challenged for a ball that was whipped into the box.

The early set-back immediately disrupted the Cosmos team and set them on the back-foot early on.

And the visitors took full advantage as they pestered the Cosmos goal with long range shots for the remainder of the half hoping to catch substitute keeper, Abisai Shimimgay, still cold after having to come on only five minutes into the match.

Youngster Donovan Thompson was the first to let rip from 22-yards out in the 11th minute, but his shot was off-target as it just skimmed the right hand-side of the upright.

Nine minutes later and Ayanda Dlamini was the first to test Shimimgay, but the Cosmos goalie was up to the challenge making a fine save to deny the Usuthu striker from 20-yards.

In the 27th minute Ayanda Dlamini came within inches of giving his side the lead when he fired a thunderbolt of a shot from 30-yards out, which had the beating of the keeper, but went inches wide of the target.

Five minutes later and it was Goodman Dlamini who had a shot on goal after he created some space with a piece of good individual skill, beating two players before hitting a stinging shot goalwards. His 25-yard shot, however, much like his teammates went narrowly wide.

Finally, two minutes from the half time break, Cosmos had their first attempt on goal when Katlego Loke let loose with a powerful shot on the edge of the AmaZulu 18-yard area, but it was straight at the keeper and Tapuwa Kapini made a relatively comfortable save.

The second half lacked excitement as both teams struggled to hold onto the ball for sustained periods of play and consequently it made for a rather boring second half.

The half did get off to an exciting start, though, as Ayanda Dlamini latched onto a Thompson left wing cross, but his header went agonisingly wide in the 49th minute.

After that, however, the action was few and far between, and the match filtered out into a goalless draw allowing Cosmos to grab their first point of the season.
